Active Isolated Stretching
What is it?
AIS is a dynamic method of stretching and strengthening designed to open up narrowed joint space caused by muscle tightness, connective tissue adhesion and poor habits of posture and movement. The method uses reciprocal inhibition to switch off holding patterns. Each position uses a short 2-3 second period of over-stretch. Each arc of joint movement is repeated 10 times, equated to 10 two-second stretches per sequence.
The body is full of "Springs" in many forms. They come from both muscle elasticity and connective tissue plasticity.
Springs provide the energy efficient means to stand, walk and move. We need springs to move with poise, grace and economy.
Improving movement involves recognizing and reawakening the body's springs and levers, stimulating the weak muscles, stretching the tight muscles and rediscovering our center of gravity where-ever we are in space and whatever activity we are doing. We need to use the full joint range of motion of our entire joints daily. AIS offers a solution by combining stretch, conditioning, and movement training.
